If you are new to yoga you are probably wondering what everyone is raving about.  A lot of people who have never tried yoga seem to be skeptical about it, intimidated by it, or both.  Hopefully, we can answer some of your questions and tempt you to try a class!

What is yoga?
It is a 5,000 year old science of breath and movement that develops your strength, flexibility, balance, and focus.

Is yoga a religion?
Yoga is not a religion.  Because of it's roots in Eastern religion and mythology, hatha yoga has often been associated with the Hindu religion, however, as yoga has become mainstream in the Western world it has evolved into a physical practice.

Funky Monkey Yoga classes are fitness based and not spiritual.  Our classes are meant to strengthen your body, increase your flexibility, and release some stress and tension in your life.

Can I begin yoga even if I'm not very flexible?

Yoga Etiquette & Tips for Beginners
  • Wear form fitting, comfortable clothing.  Layers provide for shedding and adding as needed.
  • Try not to eat a heavy meal 2 hours prior to class.  It is best to do yoga on an empty stomach.
  • Please turn off cell phones and pagers.
  • Please arrive a few minutes early and unroll mat quietly.
  • Please no heavy perfumes.
  • Yoga is done barefoot for a safe experience.  Bare feet grip the mat more effectively.

More Tips For Your Yoga Practice

  • Breathe!  Unless otherwise instructed, inhale and exhale through the nose, not the mouth.
  • Listen to your body.  Working to your edge on the stretch, but never to a place where you experience pain.
  • Let your eyes have a soft focus.  Turn your attention inward and avoid comparing yourself with others or mirror gazing.
  • Seek stability and comfort in the breath, postures, and movement.
  • Stay present.  Focus mentally on just your yoga breathing.  When your mind drifts away, bring it back to the breath.  Listen to the sound your breath makes.  Feel the air entering your nose and expanding your lungs.  This is how the breath is used to connect the body and mind.
